PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS CHAMPS 2052 !!!

PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS Nbaab

Not many people gave Portland a chance to do much other than contend for a lower playoff seed. Coach Ron Swanson, however, had faith that his squad had what it took to compete in the conference. The Trailblazers got off to a hot start behind breakout stars PF Sergio Jurado and SG Rex Allen along with unheralded PG Dwight Holmes. C Jeff Lay had championship experience and his leadership was another important component to this team. The final starter was rookie SF Jessie Sims, who Swanson gave up multiple draft picks to move up and select 2nd overall, only to be questioned on taking Sims over the higher scoring Roy Childers. Swanson, however, loved Sims's versatility, championship experience at the college level, and fit with the rest of the team.

Portland hung around the top of the conference standings for the first half of the season, with only the red hot Houston Rockets being able to maintain a lead over them in the standings. Then, disaster struck as Holmes tore his ACL. Most, including Coach Swanson, thought this was the deathblow to the Trailblazers. For a while that appeared to be true. Backup Jeffrey Reese had some ability, but was limited on the defensive end and not quite as experienced distributing the ball. The team slumped, especially the play of Jurado who had been the All-Star MVP, during the 2nd half as Portland slumped down the stretch but had been good enough in the 1st half to hold on to the 4th seed.

Once the playoffs began, Portland found some fire. Jurado re-awoke in a big way as the Trailblazers went to the limit with Dallas, winning in 7 games.

Then, some luck entered the picture as the Memphis Grizzlies knocked off top seed Houston in the first round, leaving Portland with a more favorable match up. Jurado continued to excel and Reese was beginning to look more comfortable at PG as Portland easily took down the Grizzlies 4-1.

That's where most thought it would end, however, as the Los Angeles Clippers stood in the way of a Western Conference Championship. The Clippers had the Trailblazers' number during the regular season and presented a bad matchup with high scoring Darius Lee running the point. But once again, despite some huge point totals from Lee, Jurado and Allen led the Blazers to a 4-2 win.

That set up a Finals meeting with the Atlanta Hawks. This was a somewhat better match up for Portland, but once again the Trailblazers would be considered underdogs. That was okay by them as Lay's leadership experience and defense in the post was a big key in slowing down Wayne Hendley. After going 2-1 in the first three games, but with narrow wins following high scoring from SG Angel Curto, Swanson gave increased minutes to Archibald Lee at SG and moved let Allen play the backup minutes at PG and that recipe worked as Portland won in 7 games. Jurado was named playoff MVP in addition to his 3rd Team All-League selection. Rex Allen also took 3rd Team All-League honors.

From Ron Swanson - Portlang GM.
